黄易

I enjoy a good Chinese read (or two) every now and then.  His works are absorbing and intriguing

大妈舞

This is a phenomena that has taken China by storm.

It is basically a dance/exercise form for middle aged ladies performed in public places. Well the objective is to get some exercise done; it probably also has a good dose of self esteem boosting element.

I am totally for the exercise bit. However truth be told, the episode is painful to watch and is an absolute assault to the visual senses.

Why would this be so aesthetically displeasing?  I have it some thought..

Firstly dancing is a touchy area.  Untrained people attempting to dance in public will not look good.

Secondly this is a dance form involving masses of middle aged ladies.

Finally and most importantly is the philosophy of this movement, which is to liberate oneself without being conscious of other’s perception, this has resulted in these women shaking and waggling their bodies unrestrained in public.

Even for experienced and attractive dancers this is a risky move because while you may ‘be one with the music’, you may look absolutely awkward and horrible; this effect gets amplified to the hilt by aged, untrained, unattractive (generally) women, which culminates in pure toxin.

B positive

That’s me

The Japanese are firm believers of a type of personality reading based on blood type. It actually makes more sense than other forms of cold reading a la star signs. Blood types are physiological binding hence there’s got to be firmer bases for associating personal characteristics with physiological attributes.   I still think they are all bunking though, although I do admit they make entertaining conversation topics at the pub with the ladies.

A Christmas Carol

I had heard the name Scrooge many times but I vaguely heard about the story, but I never read the full story until now.

This is a novella instead of a full novel.  I got enamoured by the elegance of the emotional accounts.. so much depth, so pensive yet we can all relate.

King Solomon’a Mines

I realised these days when I read something, it has to be a classic.

I don’t mind contemporary reads, but quite often no matter how engrossing the read is, once it is done very little actually registers. The ride was good while it lasted but leaving a lasting impression it does not.

That’s why classics are the way to go. This one is no exception.

The narrative, story, development, climax, aftermath are top notch.  That’s all given. It reads the reader gasping ‘what a ride!’.  I didn’t exactly left wanting for more as the story on a whole was satisfying and exhausting enough.

Being the lame person that I was, I looked up the internet for a movie adaptation, to my surprise (or perhaps not..) the role of Henry Curtis was altered to a female in the form of Sharon Stone.  Such ingenuity! (Not...!)
